What is an ALC?
Agricultural Land Classifications (ALs) are soil surveys undertaken to assess the quality of agricultural land, normally earmarked for development. England and Wales use a 6 grade system, with Grade 1 the best quality and Grade 5 the worst when regarding potential for a variety of arable crops. Grade 3 (mid-quality) is separated into subgrades 3a and 3b following the most recent guidance updates. Best and Most Versatile (BMV) land, Grade 1-3(a), is offered additional protection by planners when considered for development.
